what is dulce de leche?

Dulce de leche is similar to caramel sauce, but made by boiling sweetened condensed milk. We love to serve it on some of our favorite Mexican desserts, including Churro French Toast.

Boiled sweetened condensed milk, also known as lechera spread, is also available pre-made, but if you don’t have it on hand, making the homemade version just as easy. Follow along as we show you how to make dulce de leche caramel in a can!

instructions for instant pot dulce de leche in can

If you’ve ever wondered how to make dulce de leche fast, this recipe is for you!

  1. Remove the label from your condensed milk can. Use goo-gone or similar to help, if needed.
  2. Place the trivet in the bottom of your instant pot. Place your can of condensed milk on top of your trivet, preferably laying down so you use less water.
  3. Fill your instant pot until the water covers the whole can. Close the lid and heat on high for 35 minutes.
  4. When it is done cooking, release the steam and open your pot. Remove your can with tongs because it will be very, very hot and allow it to cool. Open your can and pour into an airtight container.
